DESCRIPTION

Life and death, light and dark, spirit and flesh-on Wormwood Island, the lines are always blurred. For Anne Merchant, who has been thrust back into this eerily secretive world, crossing the line seems inevitable, inescapable, destined.

Now, as Ben finds himself battling for the Big V and Teddy reveals the celestial plan in which Anne is entwined, Anne must choose: embrace her darkly powerful connection to a woman known as Lilith and, in doing so, save the boy she loves…or follow a safer path that is sure to lead to Ben’s destruction at the hands of dark leaders. Hoping the ends will justify the means, Anne starts down the slippery slope into the underworld, intent on exploring the dark to find the light. But as the lure of Lilith proves powerfully strong, will Anne save others-only to lose herself?

Introduction

I am so excited to be kicking off THE WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT Blog Tour hosted by Kismet Book Touring and to have Author Joanna Wiebe stop by and share her favorite scene and most challenging scene to write. I love this series – it’s dark and different and filled with all sorts of twists and turns – and I can’t wait for the next book to see how it all ends… even though the last sentence of the author’s post makes me just a little bit nervous.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to check it out, there’s some information about the first book in the series a bit further down. But if you’d like to see what the author said first, the non-spoiler-y guest post follows immediately below.

And if you’d like a chance to win a copy of this very awesome book, scroll down for the giveaway.

Joanna Wiebe’s Favorite Scene and Most Challenging Scene to Write in

THE WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT – and Why

In the second book in The V Trilogy, we learn less about the mysteries of the island and the boarding school Cania Christy, and more about the relationships between the people struggling to survive, in their own ways, on Wormwood Island.

Exploring and developing relationships between characters is, for me, the reason to write. People are simply beyond fascinating. (I’m one of those people-watchers that can sit in a café for hours just staring out the window. Doesn’t that sound sad!) And people are all the more interesting when we’re caught up in an intense competition.

Little wonder, then, that my favorite and most challenging-to-write scenes are about the changing nature of the relationships the students of Cania Christy have with one another as they battle for a prize only one of them can receive.

MY FAVORITE SCENE TO WRITE

At one point in the story, Anne is forced to chop off all her hair. That was actually a super-fun scene to write because, IMHO, it’s always more enjoyable to put characters in terrible situations than it is to watch them, say, intertwine their fingers with someone while gazing dreamily over a moonlit lake.

But the hair-chopping scene wasn’t my favorite scene. My favorite scene was the one that follows it, in which, humiliated and self-consciously sporting a nearly bald head, Anne returns to her room only to be joined by Harper Otto, the girl who’s supposed to hate her. Instead of mocking Anne, Harper extends this really sweet olive branch.

At several points in this book, we see the possibility of friendship between Anne and Harper, but that scene in particular shines a light on what their relationship could be if they weren’t caught up in the race for the Big V.

MOST CHALLENGING SCENE TO WRITE

The toughest scene for me to get through saw Anne and Ben half-naked in bed together. It’s not quite how it sounds, but Anne is trying to convince Ben to do one thing, and Ben’s trying to get what he wants without giving Anne what she wants.

On the surface, it’s just a nearly seventeen-year-old girl and her boyfriend experimenting with how far they can take their relationship. But their unmistakable differences are just a shallow layer down – and that’s where it gets hard for me. You see, I started working on this trilogy four years ago, so I’ve had a fair bit of time to let the characters come to life in my mind. Along the way, Anne’s taken one shape, and Ben’s taken another, and I struggle with whether their shapes are too different to let me connect them the way I’d expected to connect them.

Description:

After her mother’s death, 16-year-old art prodigy Anne Merchant moves from sunny California to the cold woodlands of Wormwood Island, Maine for what is supposed to be a fresh start. She is the newest student of Cania Christy, an elite boarding school that is as filled with secrets as it is with the world’s most privileged—and competitive—teens.

From the first day of school, Anne finds herself thrust into the Big V competition, an intense race to the top of the class. With enviable talents, she quickly becomes the enemy of every junior seeking the Big V—especially Harper, the presumed frontrunner.

Like every student, she is assigned a guardian, and a unique mission. Anne’s assignment is to “look deeper.” Anne is determined to succeed, and won’t let anything —not even her distractingly beautiful neighbor Ben—get in the way. But the deeper she looks the more questions arise, and the more she is forced to reexamine all of her assumptions—about the school, her classmates and even herself.

As layers of secrecy deepen, Anne leans on the friendship of Molly, a lifelong islander, and Pilot, the only junior not competing for the Big V, to make sense of this cloak-and-dagger world. But when people start disappearing, Anne uncovers a stunning truth that she must face head on—before she and everyone she loves is destroyed by it.
