Jeth Seagrave and his crew of mercenaries are pulled into one last high-stakes mission in this breathtaking sequel to Mindee Arnett’s fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi thriller Avalon.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew are on the run. The ITA, still holding Jeth’s mother in a remote research lab, is now intent on acquiring the metatech secrets Jeth’s sister Cora carries inside her DNA, and Jeth is desperate to find the resources he needs to rescue his mother and start a new life outside the Confederation. But the ITA is just as desperate, and Jeth soon finds himself pursued by a mysterious figure hell-bent on capturing him and his crew—dead or alive.

With nowhere to run and only one play left, Jeth enters into a bargain with the last person he ever thought he’d see again: Daxton Price, the galaxy’s newest and most fearsome crime lord. Dax promises to help Jeth, but his help will only come at a price—a price that could mean sacrificing everything Jeth has fought for until now.

The conclusion to the story Mindee Arnett began in her acclaimed novel Avalon, Polaris is a dangerous journey into the spaces between power and corruption, life and death, the parts of ourselves we leave behind, and the parts we struggle to hold on to.

On Being a Crime Lord by Daxton Price

For the last 246 days I have been a crime lord. My name is Daxton Price and this is not what I wanted to be when I was little. All I ever dreamed about was joining the space fleet of Gallant Prime, my home world. I wanted to be a fighter pilot. The fighter spacecraft of Gallant Prime are mostly Orbweavers, a spider-class, single-manned ship. Those babies have sixteen radial thrusters.  They can do a full 360 rotation in any direction with only a .03% drift. It’s an amazing feeling, all that power. There are Orbweaver simulators at Peltraz, the spaceport where I live and rule, but they’re not quite the same thing.

Of course now that I am a crime lord I could easily buy my own armada of Orbweavers, but what would be the point? It’s not like I have time to fly one. Not between business negotiations, official government meetings, the random execution, and countless other obligations. If I’d known how much work was involved in being a crime lord, I never would’ve taken over for my predecessor, the man they called Hammer. Then again, it’s not like I took over by choice. Not really. All I wanted to do was to destroy the man who murdered my family, usurped my life, and saddled me with a brain implant. But that’s the rub, isn’t it? The brain implant. The moment I held Hammer’s master implant in my hand, I couldn’t not have it. Who was I without my brain implant, without my position in that hierarchy of minds? Nobody. But with the master implant, I could rise to the top, become king of Hammer’s enterprise. Become god.

Most of it was easy. With the master implant, the Malleus Brethren and the Malleus Guard bent to my leadership without challenge. I had been one of them for years, after all, and now I had become the best of them, the highest. But the Malleus was where the ease ended. They accepted my authority without question, but everyone else had doubts. Some of Hammer’s business contacts knew me by reputation if not by sight. But it wasn’t enough. To them, my skills as a marksman and bounty hunter meant little. All that mattered to them was if I could continue the cash flow Hammer had so successfully set in motion. Some of them walked away from deals, hurting my bottom line and forcing me to respond with violence. But violence is costly. I had to find a way to prove to them that it’s in their best interest to continue on with me. I needed to prove that I was just as much as Hammer.

But how?

It was a question I spent weeks and weeks contemplating. But then the answer came. To prove my worth I needed to make an example, to show the world the risk of defying me. And there was only one person who would work—Jeth Seagrave. I spent months chasing him, bounties posted, the best of my Brethren dispatched. But then something happened, the tables turned, my purpose shifted. I have something Jeth wants. I have something he needs. And once I catch him, it will change his world forever.

A ragtag group of teenage mercenaries who crew the spaceship Avalon stumble upon a conspiracy that could threaten the entire galaxy in this fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi adventure from author Mindee Arnett.

Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they’re damn good at it. Jeth doesn’t care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents’ ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he’ll go to get the freedom he’s wanted for so long.

Avalon is the perfect fit for teens new to sci-fi as well as seasoned sci-fi readers looking for more books in the YA space-and a great match for fans of Joss Whedon’s cult hit show Firefly.
