Murder, kidnapping, and forbidden romance abound in this thrilling sequel to Sara B. Larson’s acclaimed YA debut, DEFY.

Alexa continues to harbor a secret love for the newly crowned King Damian, yet she remains by his side as his guard and ever committed to helping him rebuild Antion and reclaim the hope of Antion’s people. However, when a new threat to Damian and his kingdom emerges, and blame is cast on the once friendly nation of Blevon, Alexa knows things are not what they seem. Once again the fate of her country hangs in the balance. Will Alexa be able to protect her king and uncover the true enemy — before it’s too late?

I am so excited to be kicking off the tour for IGNITE by Sara B. Larson. I am crazy, madly in love with this series and this sequel is even more awesome than I’d hoped it would be and I cannot wait for its release tomorrow.

I spent the entire read tied up in knots because it was that kind of read. And I cannot believe all that went down in this book and where things ended up. Of course I won’t reveal any of that. But not to worry, as you only have to wait until tomorrow if you don’t yet have it to read.

In the meantime, I have a fab interview with Author Sara B. Larson in which she talks about writing this sequel, what the draw is for fantasy, what you can expect from IGNITE and who she liked writing about just a little bit more – Damian or Rylan.

And if you don’t have a copy pre-ordered to arrive, there is an awesome tour-wide giveaway for ten copies of the book. So be sure to check it out.

Q. What was the most exciting thing about embarking upon/writing the sequel to DEFY?

Getting to continue Alexa’s story! I’ve known from the start how it’s all going to end, and it was thrilling to get to dive back into this world with her, Damian, and Rylan to put the next part of their story down on paper!

Q. What is it that draws you to epic fantasy?

I’ve always loved fantasy. Everything seems bigger somehow, situations are often so much more dire than they are in “real life.” So many things are possible when magic literally exists in some form or another, and the worlds are often shaped and destroyed by its power. Love feels raw and powerful (and often is). I just adore diving in to that—creating a new world, creating a system with power and consequences, and discovering everything that world holds. It’s thrilling and daunting and just way too much fun.

Q. What can readers expect from IGNITE? And are there any of those jaw-dropping moments that we should brace ourselves for?

Hmmm, well I don’t like to spoil anything, but I will say this: we are being told this story from Alexa’s point of view, and in DEFY she had been fairly sheltered (and had a lot of knowledge about her kingdom and world kept from her), so her view was somewhat limited of what was really going on around her. But in IGNITE, that view begins to crack open, she begins to realize just how big this game really is that is being played all around her—and with her and those she loves. The stakes will be raised, lives and kingdoms will be in jeopardy, fights will be fought, love will be tested and brought to the breaking point…Yep. There might be some moments to prepare yourself for. That’s all I’m going to say.

Q. In what ways has Alexa changed since we last saw her?

IGNITE starts pretty quickly after DEFY ends. Alexa is still recovering and dealing with the consequences of her choices in DEFY when new threats suddenly arrive. If you’d like a sneak peek into her life post-DEFY, pre-IGNITE, make sure to check out the bonus scenes I’ve been posting on Wattpad!

Q. Rylan or Prince Damian – who was your favorite to write and why? And do you think Alexa would agree with your decision and reason?

Ooh, that’s tricky. I love them both, but I will admit that Damian was maybe more fun to write, because he had so many secrets. He put so many nuances into the things he said, there were so many times when his dialogue had double meanings. He’s layered and complicated and just so fun to write. But Rylan is a fantastic character, too, even though he’s more straight forward than Damian. Many of the scenes with Rylan in DEFY and beyond are some of my favorites, so really, it’s like asking me to pick which child is the favorite. It depends on the day! And as for Alexa, well, you’ll have to figure that out for yourself.

Q. If you had one wish for Alexa, what would it be?

Peace. Peace with herself, peace in her life, and peace in her heart. All of which would hopefully lead to true happiness for her, because heaven knows she’s had plenty of heartache and pain.

Q. Antion or Blevon – if you had to choose which Kingdom to call home, which would you choose and why?

Hmm… Blevon is much more like the home I’m used to, as far as climate and geography goes. The people are very different, as I based much of that kingdom, including the language, on Asian culture and the Chinese language. But I’ve always been fascinated by the jungle and it would be fun to live there, for at least a while. And of course, Damian and Rylan are in Antion, so that seals the deal right there!

Q. What is your favorite non-spoiler-y quote or passage from IGNITE? What makes it a favorite?

Oh boy, I can’t share my absolute favorites because they are definitely spoilery. But this is a great quote that isn’t too spoilery and gives you a hint of where IGNITE starts and where it’s going!

I crossed in front of Damian’s door again, my thoughts turning to my king, as they often did. Though I’d made my choice, and convinced Damian that I didn’t have any feelings for him, it was yet one more buried wound that I carried with me. I could never let him uncover the truth — that not only did I have feelings for him, but I was still in love with him. I would do whatever it took to keep our new king safe and to help him rebuild his kingdom and be the best ruler he could be, even if it meant causing him pain now. It was the right thing to do.
